Classes and Workshops
I offer a variety of classes and workshops through CraftStudies, a local organization dedicated to inspiring creativity and connection through craft. Classes are booked through the CraftStudies website but take place at my studio in the Hartford Woolen Mill Building. Classes range from single-day events to multi-week workshops, and will be announced seasonally.

Letterpress Holiday Cards
Nothing says “happy holidays” like a handmade card, and nothings says handmade better than letterpress! Using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations, you’ll design a single-color card and print it on a printing press that started its working life in 1892. At the end of the day, you’ll take home 25 handmade cards (plus envelopes) in plenty of time to get them sent to friends and family before the holiday season gets too busy.

Letterpress Gift Tags
Give your gifts that final piece of made-with-love polish with hand-printed letterpress gift tags! Using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations, you’ll design a personalized tag that will let any gift recipient know how much you think of them, then print it on a press that began its working life in 1892 for that special “impression” that only letterpress can give. Bring your creativity and wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little inky.

Halloween Posters Date Night
Grab a friend and celebrate the season with some spooktacular letterpress printing! Using DayGlo inks on dark paper, we’ll combine Halloween imagery with your favorite Halloween saying, then pull some prints on a press that began life in 1911. Participants will learn the basics of setting type and running the press, but we’ll focus more on having fun with the designs and colors. No letterpress experience necessary, and all printers are welcome, age 12 and up.

SHPS at the Norwich Farmers' Market
The Norwich Farmers' Market features a wide variety of fresh meats, local dairy, fruits and vegetables, as well as unique crafts made by local weavers, carvers, potters, jewelers, and printmakers. This year, Scale House Print Shop will join the NFM as a day vendor, and I hope to see you there!

Letterpress Posters
Learn the magic of combining type, paper, and ink at this all-day letterpress workshop. You’ll learn the basics of the history of printing, how to set type, and how to print your design on a press that has been in use since 1913 as you create a letterpress poster in up to two colors using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and hand-carved illustrations. The 20 posters you’ll take home will show the signature letterpress impression that only type can make and make great gifts!

Letterpress Cards
Nothing says “I love you” like a handmade card, and nothings says handmade better than letterpress! Make an impression this Mother's Day when you use antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations to design a single-color card and print it on a printing press that started its working life in 1892. You’ll take home 20 handmade cards (plus envelopes). Class takers should come with an idea of a short phrase (no more than 10 words) that they’d like to use in their card design.

Letterpress Exploration
This class is designed for those who want to explore letterpress printing a little further, have several projects in mind, or want to design something with multiple colors and layers. (Beginners are also welcome!) We'll meet each Tuesday evening in April, and class takers should plan to complete between 2 and 4 projects over the five weeks, depending on the complexity of their design. Those who complete this class will be eligible to rent supervised studio space at SHPS in the future.

Daredevil Typsetting
This class is for anyone, beginner or experienced printer, who has ever wondered, why can’t we set type in anything other than a straight line? The answer is, we can! In this one-day workshop, we’ll design cards and small posters with type in circles, on the diagonal, scrambled, or whatever your daredevil idea may be! Then we’ll print our designs on presses that began their lives in 1913 and 1892, respectively.

Looking for something a little out of the ordinary to do with your special person this Valentine's Day? Come to Letterpress Date Night to create something special together using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations. You can choose to create either a set of 20 cards or 20 small 8" by 10" posters, which you'll then print together on a printing press that began its working life in 1892 for that extra special "impression" that only letterpress printing can create!
